Harem Royal

I just came across a jewellery design house called Harem Royal, and wanted to share some of their work with you. The richness of the colours is so amazing, and softens the sharp lines and somewhat mechanical nature of the pieces. The style makes me think of steampunk insects, beautiful yet dangerous. What inspiring work! It is so refreshing to come across artists whose style is so vastly different from my own - it reminds me that this world is filled with so many talented people, and so many beautiful things.

So you may have noticed that it's coming up on Valentine's Day💝 And as you may imagine, it's pretty difficult to blog from a jewellery store without posting at least a few images of lovely love-inspired pieces... it just can't be helped!

In my esteemed opinion, hearts are good any time of the year, but especially relevant in the first few weeks of February. So here are just a few suggestions, from my heart to yours:

This is a dainty art deco bracelet by Jewelust (Amanda Henderson), but if you ask me it looks like two intertwined hearts. Sterling silver on chain $145

Warm Weekends

Like any good Canadian, I love the wintertime. Fresh snow, rosy cheeks, and wool toques are just a part of life up here, and sweater weather is always an exciting time of year. But also, like any normal person, I am SO DELIRIOUSLY HAPPY when the weather pokes its head above zero, even if for just a brief respite. This weekend has brought a bit of rain, but it also brought milder temperatures that already has me daydreaming of springtime.

So I thought I would share a few pieces that brighten my day and make me think of sunshine, warm breezes, and flowers in full bloom.

I woke up this morning thinking it would be grey and overcast all day, but this beautiful sunshine has proven me wrong. And I have something else to brighten your day - introducing the gorgeous and detailed work of the Radi Brothers, by Zef Radi.

Zef has brought his family-born love of jewellery to Jewel Envy, and I strongly encourage you to come by and take a look at what he makes - the craftmanship is beautiful and refined, and lets the design work really shine through. The shapes are quite simple, but the filigree, contrasting metals, and gemstones add so many layers of colour and depth. Your ears are begging to try these on!

Special Event Sunday

Time is running out to purchase work of Ivane Thiebaut's Canadiana series, June's featured work on the recently added Jewel Envy online shop. As a recent newcomer to Canada, Ivane fully embraces her new home's landscapes, icons and culture and draws on them for inspiration in her design and jewelry work. Each piece in her collection acts as a glimpse into her relationship with her surroundings and are easily relatable to all who have visited this beautiful country, or are lucky enough to call it home.

Hi all! Hope everyone is enjoying the warmer weather these days - it sure took its sweet time getting here! If you're anything like me, then you love getting outdoors this time of year. Enjoying nature without the confines of parkas and mitts and hats and scarves (etc...) is just the best. There is so much beauty to be found once the snow melts!

This July 1 Canada celebrates the 150 anniversary of our confederation. And there has never been a better time to support our Canadian goldsmiths and designers. We all get inspiration from where we live and what we see unfold around us.

One such designer is Anneke van Bommel of Touch the Dutch. Anneke's work is original, beautifully made, and the design of her Canadiana line is executed with a small wink to all of us in Canada.

My favourite of all Anneke's Canadiana pieces harkens back to when Trudeau was our Prime Minister--Pierre Elliot, the father of Justin!  It perfectly encapsulates the Canadian attitude of following tradition yet moving forward into the future and features Trudeau's iconic pirouette behind the back of Queen Elizabeth II.

PRISMATIC GEMSTONES - TOURMALINE

Hello friends! If you are a lover of gemstones, then you might be familiar with tourmaline. Oh, beautiful tourmaline. It is a semi-precious gemstone with elongated prismatic crystals, and depending on the elements present, it comes in a multitude of different colours. The most common colours are shades of pink and green - my favourite tourmaline is of the watermelon variety, which is a beautiful combination of the two.

We at Jewel Envy are always looking for special ways to make our customers happy--from learning how to make your own jewellery in our classes, to redesigning that special heirloom piece into your very own special jewellery, to repairing your most cherished, favourite piece so you can wear it again, to offering you unique one-of-a-kind, handmade jewellery!

This month, we are featuring the  "Branch Collection" by  Micheline Roi of atelier J contemporary jewelry (that's me!).

 Developing the branch line was a wonderful AND NEW process for me.  The design developed organically without a lot of mediation.  By nature I am a planner, I like to think, analyze, critique and then start work. But in this branch series, I let the material lead the creative process.

The design started with the gemstone on the uppermost curved silver rod.  This original section was left alone for a couple of weeks and in the interim, smaller, curved pieces of silver rod from another piece I was working on were floating around my jewellery bench.  On a whim, I started playing with arranging these pieces with the original section--hoping some pleasing form would present itself.  And it did!  Suddenly the branch form was there.  Who knows where these ideas come from--maybe from all those hours staring out of my studio window at my branches of my garden's tress?
