We might have seen them in antique stores, or on our grandmother's jewellery box, small portraits, usually from a woman on a profile view carved in a white shell and added to a coral oval back, surrounded by many ornamented accents and being a versatile piece that could double as brooch or a pendant.

Most cameos represented women in classical Greek attires or pictorial scenes drawn straight from Greco-roman mythology, Artemis Or Diana on a profile with a crecent moon on her forehead, the three graces prancing delicately like ballerinas and other images are very common in this remarkable piece of jewellery.

This Greco-roman influence gives us an amazing start point for this pieces of jewellery to enter the world of fashion as discoveries in archeological expeditions and the uncovering of many ruins and temples at the beginning of the 19th century sparked a neoclassical wave that influenced painting, music, sculpture, attires and many other forms of art, including jewellery.

The most versatile of the jewellery pieces in my opinion, cameos were not only worn by women, as men would also wear then in the cravats, side pockets or the fold of a coat. Of course cameos for men depicted masculine scenes, like a water bearer almost naked, profiles representing classical heroes from literature like Achilles and roman emperors.

Most men and women from the higher classes would commission their own portraits on a cameo.

Not as common today (sadly) many cameos remain as amazing legacies of intricate design and fashion from the previous century. We can find them in antique shops commonly, but there are still goldsmiths and carvers that will create them, and you can even commission your own portrait.

I hope this small article was informative and spark your curiosity about cameos and vintage jewellery!
Seed pearls are small pearls formed in saltwater mollusks that are usually 2mm or less in diameter; used vastly on Victorian jewellery as an accent and were considered pure elegance because of the white color and the delicate shine they added to any piece.
The most famous example of the use of seed pearls is the Gatchina Palace Egg created by the Russian jeweller Peter Carl Fabergé for the Tsar Nicholas II of Russia; the egg was an Easter present for his mother and contained a replica of the small town palace.
We recently got DMs from a customer with wonderful pictures and I couldn't wait to share them! Jade came into the studio last fall and after introducing her to our space and giving her the run down on what we offer including repairs, redesigns, custom, and classes she was immediately curious about custom creations. She had a vision in mind for the engagement ring of her dreams and we were more than happy to make it happen. Parul searched around for the perfect gem that had a magical colour shift (green/red) called andalusite and it paired beautifully with the leaf pattern of the ring made in rose gold. Then Alexis matched the leaf pattern with a mixed metal rose and white gold band for David. Please enjoy the fabulous pics sent our way!
Where did the summer go?

Today, I thought I'd talk just a bit about August birthstones, since gems are always a fun topic! The most well known birthstone for August is the Peridot. Here are a couple of images of peridot: an image of rough stone in matrix, and a faceted one....
Peridot is a magnesium and iron-rich silicate, and is sometimes known as chrysolite. It can vary in colour depending on the amount of iron in the crystal, from yellow, to olive to a more brownish-green. Occasionally, they can be darker, or a more pure green, but this is relatively rare.

The other main birthstone for August is the spinel. Sometimes mistaken for a ruby, it often has a pink to red colour. With crystals incorporating Magnesium and Aluminium, although its main colour is pink, you do sometimes find them in other colours including blue, green, yellow, brown, black, or violet.
Know anyone with a birthday in August? Why not come see what we can design incorporating peridot or spinel for an extra special birthday gift! We like to rotate the displays, and we have just recently changed out the windows to showcase one of our newest additions-the work of Alex Kinsey of Kinsley Vey Designs. Alex has a number of pieces from his 'Growth' collection available in the retail shop of the studio, like these earrings and pendant:

thousands of years, emeralds have
been mined and considered one of the world's most valuable jewels. The
first ever recorded emeralds date back to ancient Egypt, where they were
particularly admired by Queen Cleopatra. In addition to their aesthetic
value, emeralds were highly valued in ancient
times because they were believed to increase intelligence, protect
marriages, ease childbirth, and thought to enable its possessor the
power of predicting future events.

emeralds are much more on demand, and not just because of their superb
quality and color. A gem's value depends upon its size, purity, color
and brilliance. Even when they are mined in
the same area, each individual emerald has its own unique look that
sets it apart from the rest. Dark green is considered to be the most
beautiful, scarce, and valuable color for emeralds. An emerald of this
color is considered rare and is only found in the
deepest mines of Colombia.

I've compiled a few examples from goldsmiths at Jewel Envy to check out with a description of the technique used to create the texture you see on these fabulous pieces of jewellery!

Don't hesitate to inquire about variations and what we can do to create the texture you've been dreaming about. Even if you don't see it, we can create it!
It is an interesting way to introduce contrast and play up elements in jewellery design. With that on the brain I did a quick search of some of my studio mates to share some mixed metal work, enjoy!

And of course, hit us up so we can come up with a custom piece using mixed metals (and don't forget we can reuse any old gold and gems in a new creation)

Happy Sunday everyone. It's Jess here at the store all day, holding it down at Jewel Envy in beautiful Rocny :) It's my turn on the blog, and I am feeling introspective. Today, I feel like writing about my WHY. Why do I do what I do?

Depending where in life you have met me, you either know me as Jessica the martial artist, the banker, the dancer, the goldsmith, the teacher or all of the above. It is true; I chose to wear many hats in my life. I always have, and I do so because it feels like me. I am proud to be multi-faceted and to go through this life meeting beautiful people, learning about myself and experiencing the things that bring me joy. Isn't that what life is about anyway?

Sometimes I wear one hat more often than another, but make no mistake, I love them all and for different reasons. That being said, the hat I want to touch on today is the sweet hat of the goldsmith. Why do I wear it and why do I love it? That's easy.

A
piece I create could be a symbol of love between two people or many, it
could be a memento honoring a milestone in someone's life, it could be
an accessory that makes you feel empowered and unstoppable, or it could
be an item of adornment. Whatever the reason, it is beautiful and sacred
to me because it is a very special part of me that is in service to you.
A piece
I create may be for a moment in time, or it may outlive me and go on generation to
generation. In doing so, I get to look inside myself for inspiration, leverage the gifts of the earth, and morph them into pieces of art. Something
that I create enters someone's life and makes them happy. I get to take something ordinary and turn it into something extraordinary. From my heart & mind, through my hands and into the world. That my friends, is called alchemy.

No matter what we do in life, whether it be one thing or many, I believe it is important we that must show up at our best. Whether designing and creating a piece of jewellery,
doing someone's hair to make them feel fabulous, serving a cup of
coffee that kicks off someone's day, issuing a plane ticket that kick starts an adventure, making breakfast that gives someone the energy to go out and tackle their dreams, or landscaping a garden that will be the playground for
memories made - remember that a part of YOU is going out into the world, and believe me, that is super special and it really means
something.

Have a beautiful Sunday everyone!
I got up this morning to sun, but my goodness, it's humid out. It's still nice and cool inside though, if you're out and about in Roncy, come see us and have a brief respite from the heat and humidity!

I love wearing jewellery (hey, I'm a goldsmith, it's a requirement, right?). However, when it starts getting hot, I find myself being more reluctant to wear things. So, what do I do with this dilemma? Earrings! Big ones, little ones, hanging ones. The sky's the limit!

We have an amazing selection of earrings, and here are just a few examples from our different goldsmiths in residence:

The other thing I do is to wear my rings on a larger finger, or I have some rings that I specifically like to wear in the summer, that are a bit bigger than my regular rings. Sometimes one size really isn't suitable for all occasions, and that's okay!

So, that's just my two cents to help you stay comfortable with style in the heat. Have a great day, and hope to see you soon!

Ancient cultures developed a fascination with accessories; materials like sea shells, glass and stone were very common on the first jewellery pieces found on archeological excavations. It was only when excavations in northeastern Bulgaria gave us an approximate date on the first time gold jewellery was crafted and worn.

The Varna civilization, a culture from the late Neolithic period, created amazing gold implements and jewellery, and because of their respect for the dead, this pieces were preserved for posterity in vast Necropolis and Cenotaphs.

Daring from 4560-4550 B.C. this pieces of jewellery show the abundance in riches the Varna culture had on their period, so much that one of the Cenotaphs contained more gold than it has been discovered anywhere else in the world for the time period.

The Varna culture was able to procure this riches thanks to the amount of lakes on the region and waterways from the Black Sea.

Such and amazing discovery!
They come in so many different variations (you can read a bit more here). I've done quite a jewellery pieces using rubies, partly because my best friend has a birthday in July (and you can never have enough jewellery, right?).

Here's a rough ruby crystal that gives you an idea of what they look like:

photo: Public Domain, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=320953

and here's an example of a faceted stone:

I kind of assumed that was the whole story on birthstones, but I recently found out that there are a whole host of other options. For example, in the 15th century, turquoise or onyx were considered to be the birthstones.
Alternatively, if you're a Cancer, you might prefer to consider the emerald as your birthstone.
Don't like your "month" birthstone? There's also a stone designated for each day of the week! I really never knew there were so many traditions around birthstones!

As you know, we all love stones at the studio! Regardless of your birthstone, why not come and check out what's new at the studio, check out making your own piece of jewellery featuring a gemstone, or discuss having a new piece made featuring your favourite gemstone, birthstone or otherwise!
Happy Saturday!

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but some times we question if the beholder has lost it's glasses (or it's mind). for a fun Sunday, I made a small recompilation of creepy and unusual jewellery around the internet.

Insects and small animals
Personally, I don't like it, for the sake of the animals (even tho some are made with already dead critters), but this is not a new trend, as insects trapped in amber are found in jewellery pieces around the world for many centuries.

Teeth and other body parts
Some decide to remember friends and family (pets included) by carrying with them some piece of the deceased, a reminder of their child's first teeth, others just had their wisdom teeth removed and wanted to do something with them; either way, its very common to get this kind of requests as a goldsmith.

Food

Dolls
To be honest, I find this one the most disturbing, carrying effigies of decapitated heads, I know they are made of plastic but still... no

Unusual and creepy or unique, you decide.
Saturday has somehow come around again, I don't know where the week goes sometimes! Today I wanted to talk a bit about enameling and jewellery. Most people are aware that traditionally, enamel referred to powdered silica (or glass), fused to a substrate, in jewellery generally copper, silver or gold. There are many different styles of enamel, and it can be a great way to include colour in jewellery, instead of, or in complement to gemstones.

If you're interested in a bit more information, you can read more here.
With advancing technology, new types of enamel have been developed, and new and inventive ways of applying enamel to different effects. Here are a couple of examples of more contemporary designs incorporating enamel from goldsmiths at the studio:
Originally found on the San Benito Mountains in California, where it got its name, but it can occur in a number of isolated locations across the globe like Japan and Australia.

It's also the State Gem of California!

The resemblance of color makes this gemstone almost indistinguishable from a blue sapphire,
although there is a trick to recognize this gem, put it under a UV light and see how this translucent gemstone becomes a glowing solid rock out of a Sci-Fi movie.

I saw a couple of girls on the stretching room ready to tackle a nice sweat session, and during the conversation that I was totally not eavesdropping, came the fact that one of them was wearing their engagement ring; this left me wondering how many people go through their exercise with jewellery on, and how bad it can be.

Seems obvious in my mind that you definitely should not wear jewellery during a workout, but there might be someone out there that will put vanity or emotion over logic, and keep their ring/earrings/necklace/etc...

After giving it some thought I came up with some reasons why you should definitely not wear jewellery during a workout.

1. Jewellery is not indestructible:

We know some precious metals are very sturdy and tend to last longer than their cheap counterparts, white gold and platinum being the ones that resist more than any other; but that doesn't make then impervious to damage.

The amount of material makes them somewhat fragile, and small details like prongs and settings can easily get bent, crushed or broken with little pressure; gemstones are at higher risk, some are very delicate and will crack with ease or can be forced out of the setting and get lost forever.

2. There is a risk of injury:

Rings and big dangling earrings can be a hazard during a workout; rings will generate discomfort while griping the equipment and the pressure can actually hurt your fingers; earrings that are too long can get tangled everywhere, poke you during certain movements or hit you during fast phased movements.

3. It can get lost:

Sweat will make your rings slip out of your fingers and a quick movement with your hand can send the ring flying and disappear forever, heavy earrings can fall, and chains will break; Jewellery is pricey, and you definitely don't wasn't to pay for your engagement ring again.

Stud earrings and piercing jewellery are fine, they are small and unlikely to get on the way during your workout session, but if you're not sure, just have a bag or any container to put them in, place that on your gym bag with the rest of your jewellery, and put them in your locker (with a lock... please)

I hope this post reaches everyone that might need the pep talk and prevent some sad moments about lost jewellery or injury; specially you girl from my gym, your ring is really nice.

Have an amazing Sunday,

Last spring I had the pleasure of visiting Ponte Vecchio in Florence, Italy and it was a beautiful experience to say the least. The Ponte Vecchio, or Old Bridge, was the only bridge across the Arno in Florence until 1218 and was rebuilt after a flood in 1345.
During World War II it was the only bridge across the Arno that the
fleeing Germans did not destroy.

Ponte Vecchio is a very romantic spot in Florence, with its great views over the river and of the bridge itself. By night, the wooden shutters of the shops create a look like suitcases
and wooden chests, making it a very suggestive route to take for an
evening passeggiata, or stroll.

There have been shops on Ponte Vecchio since the 13th century. Initially, there were all types of shops, including butchers and fishmongers and, later, tanners, whose "industrial waste" caused a pretty rank stench in the area. In 1593, Ferdinand I decreed that only goldsmiths and jewelers
be allowed to have their shops on the bridge in order to improve the
well being of all, including their own as they walked over the bridge.

Today there are hundreds of shops alongthe Ponte Vecchio that glisten with gold for your viewing and purchasing pleasure. I know I indulged in a couple keepsakes for myself and I encourage you to do the same next time you find yourself in this Artisan city ~ you wont be disappointed!
